New BiH standards adopted by translation method in the field of precious metals

The Institute for Standardization of BiH, through its Technical Committee BAS/TC 38, Metrology and measurements, adopted the following standards in the field of precious metals:

BAS EN ISO 11426: 2017, Jewellery - Determination of gold in gold jewellery alloys - Cupellation method (fire assay), 2nd edition, is a translation of the English version of European standard EN ISO 11426: 2015, Jewellery - Determination of gold in gold jewellery alloys - Cupellation method (fire assay), (ISO 11426: 2014).

This standard specifies the cupellation method (fire assay) to determine gold in gold jewellery alloys. The gold content of the alloys should preferably lie between 333 and 999 parts per thousand . The procedure is applicable specifically to gold alloys incorporating silver, copper, and zinc. Some modifications are indicated where nickel and/or palladium are present in the so-called white gold alloys, as well as for alloys containing 990 or more parts per thousand of gold. This standard is intended to be used as the recommended method for the determination of fineness in alloys covered by ISO 9202.

This standard replaces BAS EN ISO 11426: 2010.

BAS EN ISO 11427:2017, Jewellery - Determination of silver in silver jewellery alloys - Volumetric (potentiometric) method using potassium bromide, first edition, is a translation of the English version of European standard EN ISO 11427: 2015, Jewellery - Determination of silver in silver jewellery alloys - Volumetric (potentiometric) method using potassium bromide (ISO 11427: 2014).

This standard describes a volumetric method for the determination of silver in jewellery alloys, preferably within the range of fineness stated in ISO 9202. These alloys may contain copper, zinc, cadmium, and palladium. Apart from palladium, which must be precipitated before commencing titration, these elements do not interfere with this method of determination. This method is intended to be used as the referee method for the determination of fineness in alloys covered by ISO 9202.

BAS EN 31427: 2010 is withdrawn and replaced by this BiH standard.

BAS EN ISO 11490:2017, Jewellery - Determination of palladium in palladium jewellery alloys - Gravimetric determination with dimethylglyoxime, second edition, is a translation of European standard EN ISO 11490: 2015, Jewellery - Determination of palladium in palladium jewellery alloys - Gravimetric Determination with dimethylglyoxime (ISO 11490: 2015).

This standard specifies a gravimetric method for the determination of palladium in palladium jewellery alloys, preferably within the range of fineness stated in ISO 9202.

These alloys may contain silver, indium, gallium, copper, cobalt, nickel, tin, and ruthenium. Coprecipitated elements have to be determined by a suitable method and a correction applied.

This standard supersedes BiH standard BAS EN ISO 11490: 2011.

European editions of these three standards were prepared by CEN/SS M21, Precious metals - applications in jewellery and associated products, and the original texts of international standards were prepared by ISO/TC 174, Jewellery.
