Sixth international congress „Ecology, health, work, sport“
International Congress „Ecology, health, work, sport“ was held in Banja Luka from 5-8 September 2013. Experts from various disciplines participated at this Congress, and presented their work through oral and poster presentations. On behalf of the Institute for Standardization of Bosnia and Herzegovina MSc Tatjana Vidovic prepared and held a presentation “Phytoncide “in vitro” activity of essential oil of Salvia officinalis from southern Herzegovina and applicability”. Health experts received information about the effects of the essential oil of Salvia officinalis (Sage) from the southern Herzegovina on different bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli), and on fungus Candida albicans. Antibiogram results showed the interaction between the essential oil and different antibiotics discs and tablets (for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria), which are used in making antibiogram for therapeutic purposes. Test results showed that the 0.5% and 1% dilution of essential oil have an inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, while it had no effect on other bacterial strains and fungi. In relation to the zone of inhibition of certain synthetic antibiotics which indicates the availability of the treatment, zone of inhibition of diluted extract of the essential oil on this bacteria indicates the possibility of using this extract in antimicrobial therapy. There is an opportunity to continue further cooperation and/or research regarding this topic with colleagues from the region.
