Standards for quantities and units are under revision

The ISO/IEC 80000 quantities and units series is referenced in the International Bureau of Weights and Measurements (BIPM)’s guide on the International System of Units and thus provides significant support for the definition of quantities and units. It consists of 13 different parts, featuring 11 of ISO and 2 from IEC, some of which are approaching final stage of their revision.

This series gives terms, definitions, recommended symbols, units and any other important information related to quantities used in science, engineering, metrology and industry. It is a reference for those writing scientific or technical documents, textbooks, standards and guides.

The following standards are currently at Draft International Standard (DIS) stage and approaching publication:

  • EN ISO 80000-2, Mathematics
  • EN ISO 80000-4, Mechanics,
  • EN ISO 80000-5,  Thermodynamics
  • EN ISO 80000-7, Light and radiation
  • EN ISO 80000-10, Atomic and nuclear physics
  • EN ISO 80000-12, Condensed matter physics

In addition, EN ISO 80000-9, Physical chemistry and molecular physics and EN ISO 80000-11, Characteristic numbers have recently reached DIS stage, meaning interested parties can once more submit feedback and their comments on these documents before final publication.

When it comes to standards EN ISO 80000-1, General, EN ISO 80000-3, Space and time and EN ISO 80000-8, Acoustics, should reach DIS stage some time later this year.

ISO/IEC 80000 series are being developed by the Technical Committee ISO/TC 12, Quantities and units. Most of the standards in this series has been adopted by the Technical Committee BAS/TC 17 - Technical drawings, symbols and units, while the standard BAS EN ISO 80000-8 has been adopted by the Technical Committee BAS/TC 36 - Architectural constructions, technology and construction management and building physics.

The Institute will monitor changes regarding these standards at international and European level and adjust work plans of said Committees in order to adopt revised standards.
