CEN and CENELEC General Assembly Meeting was held
On June 21 and 22 in Belgrade, Serbia, the annual meeting of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) was held, and was hosted by the Institute for Standardization of Serbia (ISS).
On the first day of the event, the 15th joint session of CEN and CENELEC was held, where strategic priorities and key achievements, among other things, were discussed. A panel discussion was held on the thirtieth anniversary of the single European market. Mrs. Maive Rutte, Deputy Director of the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, also participated in this discussion. On that occasion, Mrs. Rutte emphasized the importance of standards for the single market and highlighted the main challenges for standardization such as: supporting the competitiveness of the European economy; the development of standards that can timely respond to emerging needs and the need to accelerate the standards development process. The problem of delays in the assessment of harmonized standards in support of European legislation and their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union was also discussed, and the information on the efforts to simplify the process and overcome long delays was provided. Nearly 200 participants from 34 European countries attended this event.
On the second day, the 59th General Assembly of CEN and the 65th General Assembly of CENELEC were held, where the reports for 2022 presented by Mrs. Elena Santiago Cid, General Director of CEN and CENELEC, were adopted, as well as the financial reports for 2022 of both organizations, along with the basic principles and framework of CEN and CENELEC draft budgets 2024. Also, during the CENELEC General Assembly, the new president of CENELEC, Mr. Riccardo Lama, President of the CEI (Italian Electrotechnical Committee) was elected and his mandate is due to start on January 1, 2024.
In order to ensure the activity of European organizations for standardization and the implementation of the Strategy 2030, it was decided that the amount of membership fees paid by national standardization bodies will increase annually by around 5%, and the reserve fund, which will be established, will increase annually to ensure the financial viability of CEN and CENELEC and their Management Center (CCMC).
The Institute for Standardization of Bosnia and Herzegovina was represented by Tihomir Anđelić, head of the Department for General Standardization and Miljan Vasković, expert associate for electrotechnical standardization.
